Frequently Asked Questions
1. How is Not A Zombie different from other dating apps?
We focus on compatibility first, photos second. Instead of swiping through pictures, users first see a text-based description (a Tile) of potential matches. Photos are only revealed after clicking on a Tile, encouraging connections based on substance rather than split-second visual attraction.
2. How does your app work?
You create a profile with a Tile and can browse other members' Tiles. If you're interested in another member's Tile, you can click on it to see their full profile, including pictures. If you like their profile, you can send them a message, and they will receive a notification that they received a message. If the other user is interested in responding, you can continue the conversation in an on-site chat system. From there, we leave it up to you :)
3. If everyone is using a tile, does that mean that there are no pictures?
Users will have pictures on their profile page. However, when initially *browsing* members, only the tiles will appear. If you're interested in another member's tile, you can click on it to see their full profile, including pictures.
4. Wait, this is a website? Why not an app?
Eventually it will also be an app. We wanted our product to be usable on both desktop as well as mobile for a more serious experience, so we went with web first. It should work great on both your desktop and mobile browsers.
5. .net? Why not .com?
For esoteric Kabbalistic reasons. Also the .com was too expensive.
6. When the full site comes out, will it be free to use?
Yes, however we will offer certain extra 'nice-to-have' features for an additional price. (See next question).
7. What is your business model?
As we see our product as providing an essential social function, basic use of the product is free for all members.
We will offer a premium version with certain 'nice to have' features, like read receipts, ability to view additional profiles per day, and so on. We would like to offer this as a one-time lifetime purchase, as subscriptions create incentive misalignments between the customer and company.
We also intend to offer 'fancy tile' designs, i.e. with textures, that users can add to their tiles for a small fee.
Further down the line, we would like to also do 'signal that you're single' merchandising, with clothing products (e.g. shirts and hats) that people can wear to advertise their tile.
8. Dating for people with brains? What should I do if I don't have a brain?
Contact a medical professional, as this can be hazardous to your health.
9. What kind of legal entity are you?
NotAZombie, Inc. is a Delaware C-corporation.
10. Do you use a 'likes' and 'matches' system?
No. These systems tend to encourage unserious behavior (e.g. 'liking' profiles you're not really interested in) which wastes everyone's time. The only way to communicate interest on our platform is via messages. Say 'Hi, I like your Tile'. You can do it, we believe in you.
11. Do you have a recommender algorithm?
Yes, eventually. The algorithm will take into account two main things - the responses of users to questions (ranked by importance) and the text users write in their tiles.
12. Does your algorithm use AI?
We use techniques from machine learning for our text-based matching system. At the moment, we won't be incorporating LLM-type models into our system, we think a targeted approach is superior for this kind of recommender system.
13. I am a zombie. Does that mean I can't use your site?
We are *Not* A Zombie, so unfortunately we cannot accept zombies at this time. Feel free to use the products of our competitors, which have many members from the zombie community.
14. Isn't the problem with modern dating apps the very fact that people are using apps and not meeting in person? How is this going to fix that?
This may very well be true, that dating apps in general have created a worse social equilibrium than existed prior to the existence of the apps. Unfortunately, however, the arrow of time moves in only one direction, and we live in a world where much of our behavior is intermediated via software. We aim to move the software in a more prosocial direction.
We are also open to opening our platform to people who want to advertise in-person social events.
15. Who is the target market for this app?
All non-zombie humans on planet Earth (and maybe Mars, eventually? We might have to put our distance filters on a log scale for that) who are interested in finding a romantic partner. Not A Zombie is not meant to be restricted to any particular community, although we will have a 'communities' feature to enable users to only browse within a selective pool that is more relevant for them. (See next question).
16. What is your opinion about <insert controversial political issue here>?
Not A Zombie takes an explicit position on only one issue: we are strongly pro-natalist. We believe that the continued existence of our species should be mankind's first priority, and that requires people to make babies.
We of course welcome people who disagree with this position to use our platform, but that is our stance.
17. I am only interested in dating people from a particular group (e.g. members of my faith community, people who love pets, etc.). There are particular things that are important to people in any community when dating that wouldn't appear on a normal dating site questionnaire. Will this site work for me, or do I need to look for something more niche?
We will have a 'communities' feature to enable users to only browse within a selective pool that is more relevant for them. Users can create a community with its own questionnaire, and invite people to join these communities, who will all fill out the questionnaire. This lets users filter members based on more specific community-dependent filters.
